Life with no TV....
« on: July 08, 2009, 05:23:38 PM »

Well, it has been almost a month since the TV screen went blank out here in the boonies.  (Yes, we bought a converter box, but NO, we haven't hooked it up.)  The TV stations in Huntsville broadcast a map showing who would need to buy a really strong antenna and maybe a very tall mast or tower to get their signal with a converter box, and we were way out in the "you may not be able to get our TV broadcasts at all out there anymore" area, so we are waiting to see about whether we want to invest that much in an antenna, etc. or just try to get prepaid satellite--since we no longer have a credit card and can't just sign up for Dish.  (Birmingham is just as far away, and there are hills in both directions, so....A Radioshack guy told us that where analog signals traveled 60 to 100+ miles with the right terrain, digital only reaches 10 or 20 from the station.)  Without buying a huge antenna, etc., rural folks have to go with buying satellite or cable programming to get TV at all.  There's no cable available here and satellite companies want credit cards--which we canceled and cut up a long time ago.

So much for free public TV in rural America thanks to our loco government!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

<Shrug>

I bought a big stack of novels-- and read them all already.  I spend a lot of time fishing on Yoville and growing things on FarmTown on Facebook.  I also watch DVDs and occasionally old tapes in the VCR--when a new low power Hispanic channel doesn't interrupt what used to be the channel for the VCR with bursts of Spanish and static. I really hope we figure something out by the fall.

I really need to go to the library and check out some new books!
