My daughter's cat seems to be having asthma attacks.
« on: July 30, 2009, 10:55:00 AM »

Poor little guy (Artemis) is in the hospital for the second time in five weeks.  I think the awful humidity is part of the problem.

The first time he had to go to the hospital was just after he got outside for a few hours and was messing around under the house.  We figure he got into some mold, mildew, or fungus outside or maybe even inhaled insulation fragments under the house.

He had another attack two days ago and we think it was in reaction to inhaling aerosol product residue.  My daughter has asthma herself and has learned to eliminate most types of sprays from her home on her own account, but my son is staying there while working a local band camp and he uses several aerosol products, so...that or moth balls in the closet and hall were the only new triggers we can think of right now.  We spent much of the day yesterday after dropping him off at the Vet's throwing out the moth balls (which my daughter was using because she is allergic to cedar) and vaccuuming to get rid of any of that type stuff the cat could have gotten into just walking around.  The vet said anything like that or cigarette smoke, perfume, etc. can make him sick.  By the way, the vet says moth balls are toxic to cats.

Well, we are now in the position of hoping and praying the cat actually does merely have asthma instead of the incurable, fatal disease the vet is afraid he has, something called Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP).
